ALL of US call on all decision makers to speak out for access to safe and legal abortion
28th September has been a regional campaign for the decriminalization of abortion in Latin America and the Caribbean for over twenty years before being taken on by activists in Europe fighting for women’s rights to decide over their own bodies in 2011.
WGNRR – Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights- undertakes on 28th September annual campaigning activities in collaboration with its members, partners, and allies around the world, and as a member of the International Campaign for Women’s Right to Safe and Legal Abortion.
This year, we celebrate the 6th International Day of Safe and Legal Abortion.
In solidarity with global and European women’s movements and in recognition of the fact that access to safe and legal abortion continues being denied for too many women in too many countries, Biljana Borzan (S&D), Malin Bjork (GUE), Angelika Mlinar (ALDE) and Terry Reintke (GREENS/EFA) will present the publication[1] of the Black Protests in Poland in autumn 2016:
“My #BlackProtest – Great Coalition on Equality and Choice”.
“Every year, 47.000 women die due to unsafe abortions. Nearly every second an abortion carried out somewhere in the world is unsafe. The situation is most threatening for those women who lack the financial means to access safe abortion. And for those women who simply lack access to information about medical pre- and postcare.”
“These are not only numbers. These are human lifes we are talking about. The very center of our “ALL of US” campaign is the recognition of the right of each woman to decide over her own body. A precondition for a truly equal society. The International Day of Safe Abortion is yet another occasion to remind all decision makers to speak out for access to safe and legal abortion.”
“It is high time to break with the myths surrounding access to sexual and reproductive health and rights. The fact is that in countries where safe abortion is not effectively accessible, illegal, or criminalised, women resort to unsafe procedures, which are much more likely to lead to complications and detrimental health consequences.”
“With the launch of the publication we want to send a strong signal: We stand united and we will fight for all women in the European Union and beyond to get the right to decide over their own bodies.”
Background
MEPs from ALDE, Greens/EFA, GUE and S&D initiated the campaign “All of Us” in the European Parliament. All of Us is a Coalition of Parliamentarians fighting for the right of every woman to decide over her own body. The book launch on the 28th of September is attended by Polish women rights activists presenting the testimonies of the #BlackProtest Movement. The book launch will be followed by a discussion ‚Meet your political allies!‘ with Members of the European Parliament from the four political groups.
