Last Saturday, four lesbian women were attacked in the centre of Belgrade. No suspects have been arrested yet.

SerbiaThe attack came less than a week after a successful, well-protected LGBTI Pride March, which was attended by two ministers as well as the mayor of the city, and happened without incidents.

The attack happened in a bar, where one man started beating the women, screaming “lesbians”. Three women were injured in this attack.

When one of the women called the police, another man tried to attack the women. Violence stopped when the women hid in the toilet.

One of the women is an author and a rights activist, who led the Campaign Against Homophobia in Sport.

Ulrike Lunacek MEP and Terry Reintke MEP, Co-President and Member of the Intergroup on LGBTI Rights reacted: “After a successful pride, this attack is a very sobering experience. Unfortunately homophobia is still deep-seated in Serbia.”

“In this regard we applaud the professional reaction of the police, which arrived quickly and assisted the women to medical services. We expect serious efforts of the police tofind the perpetrators soon and ensure they are brought to justice.”

Tanja Fajon MEP, Vice-President of the Intergroup on LGBTI Rights continued: “It is unacceptable that LGBTI people still face violence, and I urge national leaders to condemn this violence in the strongest possible terms”

“The government should show its commitment to the human rights of LGBTI people. Not only at Pride, but all year round.”

No political leader has reacted to the attack yet.
